Body composition analysis

What is Body Composition?

Your body is comprised largely of water, fat, muscle and bone. The proportions of these change according to the diet you follow, how much you exercise and how much you hydrate or dehydrate. Measuring body composition gives a more detailed picture of your health and is a far more comprehensive assessment than simply measuring body weight or calculating BMI.

What is Body Composition analysis?

A device uses bioelectrical impedance analysis (BEI) to conduct a full body analysis providing an accurate breakdown of muscle, fat, bone and water content. Each one of these contribute toward your total body weight and change in response to interventions such as dietary changes, exercise and medical treatments. The procedure takes a few minutes to complete and provides the doctor with information such as:

  • Metabolic rate (your metabolism)
  • Body fat – visceral fat, % body fat, body fat mass
  • Muscle mass and % muscle mass
  • Muscle : fat ratio
  • Body type analysis
  • Segmental analysis of body composition of the various body parts can also be individually done e.g. arms, legs, trunk etc.
